Picture it, Southern California’s San Fernando Valley, 1946, post-World War II, almost the center of the known world, or at least the world that everybody wanted to know. Thriving, bustling, infectious and within the glow of pre-1950’s Hollywood, the boulevard a rushing river of neon and chrome, magic in the air and hardly a care in the world. You couldn’t ask for a better time, you couldn’t find a better place to see or be seen.
Have you ever wondered how we got here from there?
Not necessarily in a physical sense, but more of a societal sense. We were once a society, a community of people who would tip our hats, smile, and say hello, hold doors for folks, and go out of our way for the good of our friends, neighbors, and even complete strangers.
I blamed SELF SERVE GAS!
What was once my mission to blame self-serve gas for all of the world’s problems has evolved into identifying the problems of modern conveniences and how they have impacted individuals and society as a whole, both for better and worse.
It sounds ridiculous, but follow along, and maybe you’ll be able to make that connection too. I hope it makes you smile, laugh a little, and I pray that it prompts some thought about what we can do collectively to get back to where we once were.
